Christmas and Hanukkah on the same day – How often does it happen?
Wednesday marks the first time the start of Hanukkah and Christmas have fallen on the same day since 2005 and only the fifth time since 1900. Hanukkah, also called the Festival of Lights, is an 8-day celebration of the Maccabees’ recapturing of Jerusalem and the Second Temple from the occupying Seleucid Empire.
Chanukah’s 8-day celebration and lighting of menorah begins this year on Christmas
According to Chabad.org, the menorah holds nine flames, one of which is the shamash (“attendant”), which is used to kindle the other eight lights. On the first night, we light just one flame. On the second night, an additional flame is lit.
