Keir Starmer has been forced to defend his government’s U-turn on pledges to compensate the Waspi women who lost out because of changes in their pension arrangements.

Labour MP and Mother of the House Diane Abbott also hit out at the decision to deny Waspi women a payout saying they had fought a ‘sustained and passionate campaign for justice’

The Government said this week there would be no compensation for the 1950s-born women despite an Ombudsman's report saying they should get payouts.

The announcement has been branded a "day of shame" for the Labour government, who have been accused of turning their backs on pension-aged women.

Three sisters have described the government's decision not to pay compensation in the "Waspi" women pension case as a "slap in the face". The Parliamentary Ombudsman said more than three million women born in the 1950s did not get adequate notice of the changes to the rises in the state pension age and should be compensated.
