On Dec. 30, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission renewed the 53-year-old plant’s operating license, allowing it to keep generating power through Sept. 8, 2050. The plant is located about 40 miles northwest of Minneapolis, on the Mississippi River.

Monticello’s nuclear power plant will continue to provide the region with energy while helping to support the local economy over the next two decades, pending state sanction.

Xcel Energy XEL announced that it has received a renewal of its carbon-free Monticello Nuclear Generating plant’s operating license from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (“NRC”). This should help the company support its clean energy vision.

The Monticello nuclear power plant gained federal clearance to operate through 2050 — pending approval from state regulators — extending the life of one of two such facilities in Minnesota.
