Kyiv’s European allies are seriously weighing the idea of deploying troops to Ukraine in the event of a deal with Russia to stop the war, as they lay the groundwork for negotiations and adjust to Donald Trump’s return to the White House.

Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, on Wednesday called for “security guarantees” from European allies and a “united” position to strengthen Ukraine. The Ukrainian president is calling for more air defenses and weapons in the face of a wave of Russian attacks on civilian targets and infrastructure.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that he was ready to compromise over Ukraine in possible talks with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on ending the war and had no conditions for starting talks with the Ukrainian authorities.

Trump has said he wants to end the conflict as quickly as possible, which would seemingly entail forcing Ukraine to accept a deal more favorable to Moscow.

In a worrying sign for Ukraine, the incoming Trump administration has signaled its disapproval of some of its recent attacks on Russian soil.
