It’s cold, and it’s going to stay cold in Chicago with only minor fluctuations in temperatures likely over the next couple of weeks.

Snow was in the Chicago area forecast Thursday as a clipper storm system moves in from west to east, the NBC 5 Storm Team said, though how much snow you could see will depend on where you live.

In Chicago, snow seasons are tracked from July through the following June. The area normally can expect 38.4 inches, according to the National Weather Service. Chicago was warmer than average during the 2023-24 season due to a La Niña climate system,

With the clouds moving out overnight, temperatures will drop into the teens with feels-like temperatures being in the single digits. Wednesday will be the coldest day this week with highs only topping out in the lower 20s at best.

Lake effect snow could impact parts of LaPorte and Porter Counties on Wednesday. Light snow is possible Thursday night into Friday, especially near and east of I-55. It was a cold day in Chicago, with highs in the mid-20s and wind chills dropping into the teens.

As Arctic air and frigid temperatures continue, the next chance for snow in the Chicago area comes Thursday into Friday as part of a winter storm developing in the southern U.S.

The seasonably cold January weather is sticking around Chicagoland this week. Early-morning temperatures Wednesday were in the single digits away from the lake and in the teens closer to the lake, with winds out of the northwest dropping wind-chill values to around zero in some locations.
