Mayor Brandon Johnson’s handpicked school board was blocked from modifying Chicago Public Schools CEO Pedro Martinez’s duties by a Cook County Judge on Tuesday, giving the embattled schools chief a victory as he battles with City Hall over the district’s future.

The job status of Pedro Martinez, the chief executive of Chicago Public Schools, had been in doubt for months amid tension with Mayor Brandon Johnson.

Martinez will remain on the job for six more months, meaning CPS will continue contract talks with the teachers union under his leadership. Board president Sean Harden said he attended to provide support for the CPS team.
