Oxford United have appointed Garry Rowett as their new head coach. The former Millwall and Birmingham City boss takes over the struggling Championship side following the departure of Des Buckingham at the weekend.

Gary Rowett has been appointed Oxford United’s new Men’s Head Coach, as he takes on the role with the sixth club of his exceptional managerical career to date.

Des Buckingham appeared to be a victim of his own success when the Oxford United board shocked everyone and sacked him at the weekend after 13 months in charge. The 39-year-old, who was appointed in November 2023, led the team to promotion to the Championship via the play-offs in May.

Rowett brings more than a decade of Championship managerial experience, with a career that has seen him take charge at Burton Albion, Birmingham City, Derby County, Stoke City and Millwall.

Oxford United have today confirmed Gary Rowett as their new head coach ahead of tomorrow's clash with Leeds United. Rowett replaces Des Buckingham, who was sacked following their home defeat to Sheffield Wednesday last weekend.
