A Delta Air Lines flight to New Orleans Sunday morning was forced to return to Boston after a “smoky odor” was detected in the aircraft’s cabin, the airline said.

The incident is among a series of flight safety incidents across North America in recent weeks, including a deadly plane collision in Washington D.C. in January.

A Delta Air Lines flight bound for New Orleans returned to Boston Logan International Airport on Sunday after a “smoky odor” was detected in the cabin, officials said. Flight DL1398, carrying 87 passengers, three flight attendants, and two pilots, declared an emergency shortly after takeoff to get priority handling from air traffic control.

The plane, carrying more than 90 passengers, landed safely without incident. No injuries were reported, and officials have yet to determine the source of the odor.

In November, when Delta Air Lines should exit the Boston-Honolulu route, the airline and Hawaiian Airlines will fly between New York-JFK and Honolulu, while United Airlines is the only one running itineraries from Newark to the main airport in Hawaii.

The move comes on the heels of a December initial launch out of Boston after the airline served more than 10,000 burgers in the air, Delta said.

Better than picking up an order of airport Shake Shack to-go and carrying it on board, hot Shack burgers are now served in-flight on select Delta routes.

Delta Air Lines will further expand its presence at Bangor International Airport (BGR) by introducing a new seasonal service to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) this summer. The airline already connects the airport with New York and will also launch flights from Bangor to Atlanta in the coming months.
