China and India agreed on Wednesday to work on easing their long-running border dispute, as the two Asian giants resumed a formal high-level dialogue for the first time in five years.

China and India have agreed to work toward a solution to their long-running border dispute in the Himalayas after a military standoff there that began with a deadly clash in 2020.

China has not scaled down its military presence on the border with India despite Beijing and New Delhi achieving a breakthrough in talks to resolve a standoff that began five years ago, the US said.

China and India reached a six-point consensus following border talks between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and India's national security adviser Ajit Doval in Beijing on Wednesday. They agreed to "continue to take measures to maintain peace and tranquillity in the border areas and promote the healthy and stable development of bilateral relations",

China is ready to work with India to enhance mutual trust through dialogue and communication, and manage differences with sincerity and integrity, the foreign ministry said on Tuesday. Lin Jian, a ministry spokesperson,

The Ministry of External Affairs, in a statement, said the SRs “provided positive directions for cross-border cooperation and exchanges including resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, data sharing on trans-border rivers and border trade”.

If these consensuses can be transformed to concrete actions, they will bring about tremendous changes to the border region between China and India, turning it from a friction zone to a gateway for exchanges and cooperation.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met in Beijing to discuss the border dispute. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to finding a mutually acceptable resolution and emphasized the importance of strengthening border management to maintain peace.

China and India should maintain the momentum of high-level exchanges, China's Vice President Han Zheng told India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in Beijing on Wednesday, state media Xinhua reported.
