Ireland’s intervention in the case taken by South Africa alleging genocide by Israel in Gaza has been received by the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Ireland has joined South Africa's case against Israel, the International Court of Justice has confirmed. The case concerns breaches of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in Gaza.

Ireland considers a number of Articles from the 1948 Genocide Convention in its intervention in South Africa's ICJ case against Israel.

Ireland has formally asked the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to intervene in South Africa’s case which accuses Israel of committing genocide against the Palestinians in its war on the Gaza Strip.

Ireland had said it would intervene in the case at the International Court of Justice, arguing that Israel’s actions in Gaza amounted to collective punishment.

Ireland, an official party to the 1948 Genocide Convention, will formally join South Africa's case against Israel accusing it of genocide in the Gaza Strip.

Under ICJ procedures, both South Africa and Israel will now have the opportunity to submit written observations regarding Ireland's intervention as prescribed by Article 83 of the Rules of Court. The court's interpretation of the Genocide Convention in this case will be legally binding on all intervening parties.
